christie has again exceded the expectations of this reader. just when you think the WoW books have run out of new interesting ways to interact the charactors and factions, a writer of this caliber surprises you with the twists and curves of a well written book. She has not been a disappointment.

Christie Golden is THE Warcraft author. If I see her name next to a Warcraft book, I will read it and already know that I am going to love it; that line of thinking does not disappoint when it comes to The Shattering. The book is very multi-dimensional and weaves several plotlines together but in a way that is very necessary and delightful. Too often, several plotlines are only confusion and interrupts the pace of a work. Golden, with her to-the-point style of writing and excellent character depth makes each character distinct and have their own very distinct voice.Taking us from Ironforge to Stormwind to Nagrand to Theramore to Orgrimmar etc etc, this book is a WoW lore lover's dream. I'd definitely recommend this whether you enjoyed Cataclysm, still play WoW, hate Blizzard, etc. But I'd definitely only read this if you know and love the characters to begin with.

"The Shattering" by Christie Golden is the perfect companion piece to the wildly popular World of Warcraft MMORPG expansion pack, Cataclysm. In fact, it probably should have been included in the collector's edition set.It follows the events leading up to the actual cataclysm, which by now, and even before the game's release, we knew was caused by the destroyer of worlds, Deathwing. This is not Deathwing's first appearance in Warcraft lore, so fans of previous books and comics will know him well. You really do not get much of an introduction to him in the book, but prior knowledge helps you know what is going on in the world of Azeroth. The book opens with a bang to say the least. We are treated to a great prologue involving Drek'Thar, who by now has aged greatly, is blind but still has the ability to see visions in his mind's eye. He offers up immediately a vision that will be very clear to World of Warcraft players. The best part of the book, and the most explanatory, was the complex reasoning behind Thrall's choice to appoint Garrosh Hellscream to warchief of the Horde. Many fans of the game were extremely disappointed in the choosing of Garrosh due to perceived character traits of being reckless and violent to no end. Garrosh is thought to be as smart as a pile of Kodo poop, and well known for his fighting abilities. We are treated to multiple conversations and arguments between Garrosh and Cairne Bloodhoof, the tauren chieftain, which culminates in a battle many readers won't soon forget. I believe that many people's opinions of Garrosh will change upon completion of this book.We also are treated to a continuation of Thrall's story arc that began with "Lord of the Clans", another must read for World of Warcraft fans, and it helps embolden our trust in Thrall as a leader to the Horde. One thing I appreciate with this book is that lulls in the story are kept to a minimum and, while not the smallest book in the series, nor on your shelf most likely, Golden is able to give the reader an experience that is best served by multiple readings. The book is that enjoyable.Perhaps one of the greatest feats of the book is that someone who has not read any other Warcraft novels or comics can pick this up and get right into the current story line of Warcraft.

As an avid reader, I have always been iffy about picking up "gaming" books. I haven't found to many that have held my attention. The Shattering was truly the exception!Let me start with my biggest complaint generally from gaming books: lack of a copy editor. Most of the time they are released with so many High School grammar mistakes that it makes it hard to read. The book itself may hold a great story but it is lost in trying to read something that seems like a rough draft. This book was well written and well edited so kudos to everyone involved. The Story: I was impressed with the amount of detail she put into describing the journeys taken by all the key players. That being said, I think some journeys were rushed due to length so maybe they could have been broken out into novellas. I think if you are a fan of the game (casual or hard-core) you will enjoy every minute of this book. If you are not a gamer but a fantasy reader, you may enjoy the story too. I don't think you have to know about the World in order to enjoy the story but it does help.Overall: I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any World of Warcraft fan! It will definitely fill the time between now and when Cataclysm releases.

This is probably my favorite book ever. I bought it back in 2010 to pass time after training at my new job. I love warcraft and honestly bought the book as more of a joke but 2 chapters in I was hooked. I have since snatched up all of Christie Golden's other WC novels and they are amazing. i constantly wait for announcements of her next titles. I do think you need a bit of Warcraft character knowledge to get into the book so wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't played the game at all. But, if you have played and you enjoy the game lore her books are a must.

This book covered the events between the Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm expansion sets for the World of Warcraft MMORPG. For fans of the series, and especially those who played the game during that era, this was a fun romp to gain more understanding of the sweeping lore changes between the two sets. There were a few parts that dragged, but I enjoyed the walk down memory lane and the added clarity.

Christie Golden is by far one of my favorite authors. Anytime I see her name tagged in a World of Warcraft book, I get excited. She does an amazing job connecting all the characters of the Warcraft universe together, as well as connecting them to the readers. The Shattering is no different. If you play the game (Vanilla player here), this book will easily help you connect Wrath of the Lich King and Cataclysm together. The book is very rich in detail and in some points you really feel like your there in the fight. I completely recommend this for any World of Warcraft players.
