This Book is a memoir, not a lifestyle book. She focuses on her mentor and how her in-laws arrange their oh-so-French homes and what makes them that way. The author and her French husband have lived in a NYC apartment, but never offered any tips on how to translate the “every room has its purpose and should be used solely for that purpose.â€I had some curiosity about the alleged “French lifestyle†as interpreted through the experience of an American woman, but parts of this book were downright offensive. At one point, M. Postel-Vijay got quite petulant that his lady friend wanted a snack and would therefore ruin the experience of their shared lunch. (Dude. Share the snack.) He also had a hissy fit that non-French cast and crew on a movie set were not being appreciatively French of the food and so disrespecting him.There is very very little here you can use if you don’t own a residence you can do work on and one large enough to “give each room its purpose†and have a fireplace,I enjoyed the sections about the home library, the home office, and the entryway—but it was nothing new and certainly not worth the money I paid. Get this from the library. Don’t even check it out, take a few notes there, and you’ll have gotten all the value a modern urban dweller can get out of this, unless expat memoirs enthrall you.
Interesting autobiography with interesting tidbits however I was not looking for an autobiography. This book should have been listed as an autobiography not a home decor help book.
Unique and surprising book! Not at all what I expected...But better! I love looking at beautifully appointed rooms and thought the small, pretty cover on this book would open to reveal chic and elegant photos of french homes interspersed with a few sentences of drivel. Instead, this writer offers a unique twist on how the French treat homes and, specifically, the WHY of decor. The writing is intimate, yet very breezy and accessible. Rather than providing static ideas about color, furniture, fabric, the author makes clear the rules for establishing a true living Home. The sections that made the greatest impression on me were the ones that described the dining and living rooms. I felt a sense of poignancy over how we Americans have lost the ability to keep each space sacred...to eat at the table and spend time in a room reserved just for that, or to enjoy time and entertain friends in comfortable living rooms..Instead we eat from containers in front of televisions and run out to dark, noisy bars to meet people, with few options to share real conversation and deepen our friendships. Part personal memoir and part simple guidebook the author makes her points sweetly and simply. I agree with another reviewer that it would make a lovely gift for anyone planning a new home space.
The author used many generalizations based on her own experiences to paint Americans in bizarre way. Makes me wonder if her "wisdom" about French living are also based on generalizations, and not accurate. What the author proclaims as revolutionary was not. The writing was pedestrian.I did not find much that was new or life changing. My cutlery and kitchenwares are well-organized, and have been for years.The book seriously needs some illustrations, but the layout was quite nice.

Love this book so much. Coming from a French family, but never raised in France, it's hard to know how to set up a French style home. This is an authentic look at not just style and logistics, but culture and family, which is exactly what I was looking for.
I purchased this book to explore the differences in French and American homes. Somewhat bored with it, but a quicfk read. the book is pretty but not what i was expecting.
