This book is written by Maria Brosius, a scholar that specializes in Classical and ancient Persian history. The fact that there are few book that give a overview of Pre-Islamic Iran is a testament of the neglected nature of this subject and why this book is so indispensable to any student or scholar of Iranian history. (Though it's excellent for general readers as well) To get in deeper detail about the strengths and not no good aspects of this book I'll make a concise list.The Good.1. Gives a excellent overview of ancient Iranian history from the Achaemenids to the Sasanians.2. Many maps, stunning illustrations, and extra nuggets of knowledge in the pages right before the first chapter.3. Has a very useful bibliography, extensive notes, and a appendix with a list of ancient Persian rulers.4. Other than giving a short of history of ancient Persia, the book also dives into Persian society, religion, art, languages, and culture.Now the bad.1. Written in a Eurocentric Western perspective. The author made this book to make ancient Iran stand alone as a civilization in it's own right. This is admirable but the there is a lot of hypocrisy as the book still talks about how Persia shaped the West and focuses on it's success in the West and the Levant. Little to no coverage of Persia's influence in the East i.e. Central Asia and northern South Asia. Oops.2. Poor bibliography. The section on the Sasanians being by far the worst. No mention or inclusion of Tourai Daryaee's works on the Sasanians. The book doesn't include the best updated scholarship in many places. This is no problem for general readers but a little bad for students or scholars.3. The book is a little slim on detail or coverage. It's a thin book with less than 200 pages if one excludes the index, bibliography, and more. As a consequence, it covers little. Like mentioned before the ancient Persian empires and their influence of the East is greatly ignored. Other notable incidents are the little coverage of Manichaeism, the material culture of ancient Iran, or the collapse of the Sasanians.This is a solid book that gives a nice overview of ancient Iranian history and gives a portrait of it's culture. As a introductory book, it is very detailed and is invaluable for the study of these neglected periods of Iranian history. Even with it's flaws, I would recommend this book to anyone interested or studying these fascinating but obscure empires and their often overlooked influence.
This is one of those history books that tries most of all to relay a chronological telling of events rather than a breakdown of the society or societies in question. (I find that it's useful to have one of each type, as they are quite complementary.) While the author does touch on some of the academic debates, she does not get bogged down in them and is to be commended for sticking to topic while still informing the reader of the debates-- it is very tempting for writers to come down on one side of a debate when describing it, surely it would be difficult not to!Ok, so why 4 stars? First off, while well written and admittedly an introduction to the topic, it is a very bare-bones treatment of it. Brosius only covers the Achaemenid Persian, Arcasid Parthian, and Sassanid Persian dynasties. Very, very little for the pre-Achaemenid, Seleucid, and early Muslim periods. It's not a big issue, but it is helpful to know some about at least the first two periods I mentioned, and interesting to know about the influence of Persian culture on the nascent Muslim world.For a more academic (and less accessibly written) book on the subject, I strongly recommend Ancient Persia. It's a mixture of thematic and chronological writing, though the author is a bit more opinionated that Brosius. Also informative are Rome and Persia in Late Antiquity: Neighbours and Rivals, which covers the relationship between the Roman/Byzantine and the Sassanid Persian empires. For some background on the pre-Persian Ancient Near East, check out A History of the Ancient Near East ca. 3000 - 323 BC (Blackwell History of the Ancient World), a history that at times is quite mind boggling given the great number of names and the relatively fast telling-- it is useful for understanding the world that the Achaemenids took over.
The book goes over three periods of Iranian dynasties before Islam. The Achameneids (550-330), The Parthians(Arscaids) (mid 200's B.C - 220's a.d) and the Sassanids (220's - 640's).Each chapter starts with a full historical survey and moves on to inform of other aspects of society under the rule of those kings. The book examines aspects such as The King and his court, Religion, Nobility, Military, status of women and royal women and etc.It's a good starting point for history enthusiasts, and those with no background on persian history. It's also useful and informative to those students who have never studied ancient Iran in detail.
It is difficult to find a history of pre-Islamic Persia. Olmstead's History of the Persian Empire is dated, and Axworthy, A History of Iran: Empire of the Mind while good, skims over the pre-Islamic periods. Brosius, in 200 pages, gives a solid foundation on ancient Persia, writing equally on the Achaemenids, Parthians, and Sassanians. Within each period, she briefly explores the same aspects of their empires - the kings and court, its political organization, religion and art and architecture.The writing is straight-forward rather than a compelling historical narrative, and she addresses women in ancient Persia only cursorily - for these reasons I deducted a star. This criticism, aside, Brosius includes quite a bit of information that is otherwise difficult to find. I was especially pleased with her chapter on the Achaemenids, a dynasty of whom I knew little. Given the relatively narrow scope, the region and time period, I would imagine the book's appeal is largely academic. In this regard, it is an outstanding short introduction.
Well done! A very interesting and informative work. It includes everything that you wanted to know, and answers all of your questions about this mysterious people group of the ancient near east.
