PI Liz Talbot is a week away from her much anticipated wedding when one of her bridesmaids gets accused of murdering a man in a bordello the bridesmaid inadvertently owns. In addition to juggling a steam-rolling wedding planner; crazy family members on both sides of the aisle; her bff guardian spirit; and a full workload, Liz must find the real killer so her wedding party will be complete.I cannot say enough good things about this series. The characters are fully-developed and multi-dimensional. The writing is smooth, the dialogue occasionally laugh-out-loud funny, the scenes deftly set, and the paranormal element very plausible. I love the relationship between Liz and Nate, her partner/fiancé/brother of her ex-husband (talk about a complicated relationship). They have each other’s backs, but they don’t stifle each other. I also enjoy the relationship between Liz and Colleen, the forever-stuck-at-17 bff/guardian angel. I would love to have someone like that in my life. Boyer’s portrayal of South Carolina, its history, rhythms, and residents seems very real to me.I lost myself in this book and was really sad when I came upon the end. Satisfied, but sad, because these characters have become like friends to me. But I’m excited to see there are at least a couple more to go in the series. That means I get to spend more time with Liz, Nate, Colleen, and the eccentric but loveable characters that populate the fictional island of Stella Maris, and the real Charleston, SC.I do recommend this series be read in order to increase your reading enjoyment.
This book moved along at a very nice pace for the first 90% and was headed for a 5 surat review from me. It had interesting story lines, intriguing characters and a compelling setting. Sadly, it then all proceeded to come to a crashing halt. The conclusion to the whodunit aspect was, to put it politely, uninspired and lacking in imagination. A neat, tidy, quick and convenient wrap up to the mystery just to allow the story to conclude by wallowing in the details of a wedding weekend where it was entirely obvious what "the big surprise" would be...SERIOUSLY?!?! Also, if a ghost, or whatever type of spirit you refer to it as, is going to be a central character then shouldn't it somehow figure in the solving of the crime? This is purely speculation, but it smacks a little bit of an author getting a case of writer's block as her deadline rapidly approached and without the assistance of a good editor to help redirect her. Too bad.
This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series. The characters are so believable, it feels like I'm reading about people I know. It helps that South Carolina is one of my favorite places to visit. The fictional setting is so real that after reading the first book, I was perplexed at why I couldn't find it on the map.The main character's best friend died as a teenager but appears in the book as a helpful apparition. I discovered these books shortly after the death of my post-college roommate. It definitely helped me connect with the main character of the book. And finally, I like that the author follows the plot where the characters lead it. Not everyone gets a happy ending, but in the end, things have a way of working themselves out.If you like cozy mysteries, southeastern coastal towns, and a realistic main character who values family and friends, then you will like this book.
Another great Lowcountry read. The "Floozy House" setting is inspired! Boyer gets the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and even though Stella Maris is a fictional island, there is a church of the same name on another SC barrier island close to Charleston. This story has "cheese straw" twists and turns, and the plot is thicker than your Granny`s She-Crab soup. The characters are clearly drawn with a gifted hand. Thanks, Susan. I think about your books every time I get on 123 heading into Greenville. I'm so proud that we have such a talented author in our little corner of the Upstate.
A good, clean (despite what the title may convey) complex mystery. It's not complex in a confusing way that's hard to follow, just that there are lots of intricacies involved. I enjoy how smart and sensible the female lead is, as well as her male counterpart. There is some humor, but I wouldn't call this a comedy. If you like cozies, you'll enjoy this book. The relationships do transpire and grow between the books in the series, but you can read this as a stand alone with no problems. I'd say it is safe for readers 16 and up.
Mysteries with strong female leads are my favorite and Liz Talbot is the whole package. A female detective you can relate to because she is just so real, there is nothing about her that seems over the top or outlandish. Truthfully, all of the author's characters seem legit, even if they are bad guys. The supernatural aspect is just a piece to the story that flows naturally and never feels less than genuine. It's a fun romp through a delectable murder mystery that doesn't disappoint in any way!Lowcountry Bordello is another fabulous, witty, charming mystery brought to us by the wonderful Susan M. Boyer. Between the setting, lively characters, and delicious humor Mrs. Boyer has created such an interesting series that you really hate coming to the end of each book.Honestly, do yourself a favor, don't start with this book! Go back and enjoy the whole series, you'll kick yourself if you don't!
Private Investigators, Liz Talbot and her fiancé, Nate are getting ready for their nuptials, when out of the blue a panicked telephone call arrives from Liz's bridesmaid. Olivia has found a body and she thinks it is her husband, Robert.Robert is alright, but, another man is not. And, how is it that Olivia is co-owner of a busy bordello? In this time and age?Liz's deceased best friend, Colleen, tries to aid from the other side, and the wedding becomes threatened. You will have to read this novel. It isn't the traditional Cozy wedding with a murder by any means.Well written and easy to read. I enjoyed the ending.
