Father Bartunek brings to bear immense intellectual and spiritual gifts in offering a gem of insight in every Gospel meditation throughout the thousand-page volume. Father Bartunek festoons his narrative promptings with quotations from hundreds of saints, alongside relevant passages from papal documents and the Catechism. The deftness with which he has integrated the Tradition of the Church is breathtaking. --Stephen Mirarchi Writer, National Catholic Register

This is a fantastic resource for studying the gospels and helping you improve the way you pray the Gospels. If you're looking for a way to deeper your understanding of the Gospels look no further. I bought this as a gift for my husband and it has quickly become a family favorite. Below are some of the reasons I highly recommend this devotional:1. Gospel Meditations are often in segments that correlate to Mass Gospel readings.2. Before each Gospel reading you'll find a quote from a Saint that relates to that passage.3. Each Gospel meditation gives you four different reflections: Christ the Lord, Christ the Teacher, Christ the Friend, and Christ in My Life.4. Each Gospel meditation has thought-provoking and relative questions for small group discussion or personal reflection.5. It includes an index in the back directing you to readings on specific topics.6. There is a section in the back directing you to readings that correlate to the Liturgical Calendar7. Each sections refers to corresponding sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church8. There is an attached ribbon to help keep your place.9. This book has an Imprimi Potest, Imprimatur, & Nihil Obstat10. There is also much information and guidance on developing your prayer life in the first 50 pages of the book. This book is a tremendous resource that you will be hard-pressed to exhaust. I looked for a long time to find a companion to my Bible and I've finally found one in this.
I’ve been following the website Catholic Spiritual Direction (I highly recommend their newsletter for daily snippets of spiritual wisdom with theology and cultural/political issues taking a backseat to raw spirituality) for quite a while now, and it’s become one of those sites that I want to read all the articles for but just don’t have the time for it.Every once in a while, when I do have the time, I find a great article that drives me to a personal spiritual revival. This happened two weeks ago with this article on the three stages of spiritual development and books/resources you should read at each stage, which begins with the basics of the Catechism on prayer and one other book that the article highly recommended as indispensable in every phase of spiritual growth: The Better Part.I needed a new resource and a kickstart to a new habit of prayer in my life, so there’s really no better way than to buy a devotional and stick to it, especially one that is designed to add structure and depth to your devotional life. This book delivers and in many ways.First, it’s simple in its theme. It goes through the four Gospels passage by passage with a four-part commentary on each passage, with each divided into commentary centered on Christ as teacher, Christ as king, Christ as friend, and Christ in my life. Each section packs a unique punch that offers a wide berth to touch your spirit wherever you might sit with God at the moment. What’s better about this book is that it doesn’t just give you the material but lays out a theology and guide on how to use the book to deepen your spiritual life, something many devotional materials leave out. It even has a walkthrough of an experienced user of the book to help give you an example of how to get through a passage and meditation session. The whole devotional tool is based around the view that one good approach to devotion is to do it in four steps: consume, converse, consider, commit. I’m usually not a fan of such trite “learning devices†like the 3 Cs of discipleship or the 4 Ps of business and such (largely because I never remember them and their stickiness is very lacking), but this one caught with me and it’s helped to structure my time with Scripture (something many people could use to avoid distraction in prayer). The walkthrough touches on how to use these four steps and allows for a loose adoption of the method, giving right-of-way to the voice of the Holy Spirit and saying inspiration in the moment or movements in a person’s spirit take precedence over completing the four steps routinely. This is an important point.People shy away from structure in their prayer life because they see it as insincere and wooden, though many who prefer spontaneous and extemporaneous prayer end up have routines and rituals by default. Humans instinctually respect and create rituals.Regardless, if you’re looking for a devotional guide this book should be on the top of your list. One caveat: think twice before buying the kindle version. There's a lot of flipping back and forth between different sections of the book, which can get tiresome on an ebook. I recommend the print copy because of this.
I love to read Scripture, especially the Gospels. There are times when I know I do not have a full understanding of the words I am reading and that is when I pickup The Better Part. Fr Bartunek gives clear explanations that truly make The Word of God come alive. I keep this reference book handy at all times at home and travel with it on my Kindle too so I am never without it. I would be over the moon if Father Bartunek would enhance the rest of the New Testament (especially the Book of Revelation) and all of the Epistles (Letters). I'd be to the moon and back if he would also do the Old Testament. His prayerful approach has expanded my personal prayer.
I have many prayer books and meditation books, but this one is by far the best. It is easy to understand, the format is perfect, gives many suggestions, and is perfect for anyone seeking a closer relationship with God. I am a Carmelite secular and highly recommend this book. It is a treasure.
This is the best devotional I've ever read or used. Every time I do a Gospel reading and commentary, I become more convinced that this must be inspired. I've given it to friends, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, and each time they come back with similar comments. Fr. John Bartunek is a man of extraordinary humility and depth, and his love for God comes through in this remarkable book. I really, really encourage anyone who wants to better know and love the Lord to read it and see for themselves.
I had lots of excuses as to why I wasn't going to like this. (why list them all?)After reading the introduction on *how* to do a meditation, and after learning that a meditation is NOT spiritual reading, I decided to give it a try.Not only are the meditation guides among the best (if not THE best) I've ever come across, the book is laid out in very helpful ways. Gospel readings are numbered and a handy table helps you find the gospel reading of the day. Verse numbers are omitted (again, I thought I wouldn't like that, but I do). Ribbon bookmark is included (and hard to lose). Flaps open up to help with the outline for a meditation (concentrate, consider, converse, commit)So- what more can I say? I've used this every week now for 4 weeks and I see myself continuing to use it every day- indefinitely.
